IN THIS EPISODE

A career educator, Doris Smeltzer chose to leave her classroom assignment when Andrea, her 19-year-old daughter, died after 13 months of bulimic behavior. For over 20 years, she and her husband traveled across the country [pre-pandemic] speaking out on the deadliness of these illnesses. She holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology, with published works including the book, Andrea’s Voice: Silenced by Bulimia, the www.AndreasVoice.org website and numerous published pieces in newspapers, magazines, and books including an article in the landmark, Treatment of Eating Disorders. She has been featured in popular media (TV, radio, film); was named a Community Hero by her hometown of Napa, CA and the NorthBay ED organization, EDRS; as well as being awarded the Soroptimist Ruby Award for Women Helping Women.

We discuss topics including:

  • What Doris wants parents to know about eating disorder
  • The reasons to have people trained in eating disorders when seeking out a team
  • How we choose to respond as parents
  • Forgiving oneself
